Cervical spine CT scan

Definition

How the Test is Performed

How to Prepare for the Test

How the Test will Feel

Why the Test is Performed

• Injury to the upper spine
• Bone tumors or cancers

• Disk herniations and compression of the spinal cord

Normal Results

What Abnormal Results Mean

Abnormal results may be due to:

• Degenerative changes due to age
• Birth defects of the cervical spine
• Bone problems
• Fracture
• Osteoarthritis

Risks

Risks of CT scans include:

• Being exposed to radiation
• Allergic reaction to contrast dye
• Birth defect if done during pregnancy
